Simone Weil's essay 'The Illiad, or the poem of force' is one of the great meditations on violence, using Homer's Illiad as the basis of the study.
Written during the Nazi occupation of Europe, 1939-45, under the pseudonym Emile Novis for Les Cahier du Sud, whilst awaiting transport to America & thence to England to join the French government in exile, the essay reflects upon the notion of force and how it effects both the wielder and the object.
